Keeping her Cool is a short video which
manipulates the structural conventions of cinema, dialogue,
and social exchange to reveal certain psychological, linguistic,
and sociological underpinnings of these forms. In this video,
two stuffed animals play out an escalating and oscillating fight
in three acts, all the while nothing seems to change.
No dialogue is disclosed, only a meta
text which is equal parts stage directions, physical delimiters,
and utterings of the character's conscious / unconscious. The
characters have gender-stereotyped reactions to their situation
and to each other, they infrequently transcend these typings.
The text is meant to reveal the abject, the reprehensible, the
real moments in social exchange where dignity, identity, pathos,
fear, and power all jostle each other to create a semi predictable
social mess.
